The traditional Greek diet ally in the prevention of eye diseases

As the professor emeritus of Preventive Medicine and Nutrition, University of Crete, Anthony Kafatos, it is no coincidence that the ypovitaminosi A is the leading cause of blindness in developing countries and more than 20,000 people annually through blinding malnutrition.

 

 In addition to the second cause of blindness worldwide challenge is narrow, with ill patients to have low levels of vitamin C and elevated uric acid levels than those without glaucoma.

 

 Diabetic Retinopathy, occurs in patients with diabetes mellitus and accounts for -17% 15% of loss of vision in Developed Countries.

 

 On the occasion of a lecture that will make the 3rd Interdisciplinary Congress of Ophthalmology, which will be held 24-26 September in Alexandroupolis, Mr Kafatos highlights the substantial contribution to the prevention of major eye diseases and chronic diseases, the traditional Greek diet in which only the fatty olive oil, which includes eating at least 500g of vegetables and 4-5 fruits a day and 3-4 meals of fish and seafood per week.

 

 "The antioxidant substances obtained through diet protect against age-related macular degeneration and prevent the occurrence of cataracts. Omega-3 fatty acids have anti-inflammatory action in the tear glands ", says Mr Kafatos.

It is worth noting that this year’s conference will present the developments in diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases, in refractive surgery, transplants and the treatment of glaucoma.

 

 The conference is organized by the Aristotle University of Ophthalmology, the LBB, the National University of Athens and the University of Thessaly, Ioannina, Crete and Patras.
